Design competition kickstarts Metro anniversary celebrations

Primary schools in the West Midlands are being invited to help lead celebrations marking an historic milestone in the history of the region’s popular tramway.

On Thursday, May 30, it will be exactly 25 years since they returned to the streets of Birmingham and Wolverhampton, and children from communities along the route will play a leading role in the landmark anniversary.

As part of West Midland Metro’s anniversary plans, local primary schools are being asked to submit designs for a special anniversary emblem that will feature prominently throughout the celebrations, including on the side of trams.

Sophie Allison, West Midland Metro Managing Director, explained: “Since the Metro opened in 1999, it has grown significantly and is more popular than ever, with tens of thousands of people of all ages using it every day for work, school or leisure.

“We recognise that young people will have a vital role to play in our future success, and that’s why we are putting them at the heart of our celebrations.”

To be in with a chance of winning the anniversary design competition, entries need to be submitted by participating schools by Monday, April 29. Schools can register their interest from today, March 25 for a chance to win £500 if the winning entry is from one of its pupils.

In addition to having their winning design featured on the side of trams and our merchandise, the winner, along with a few classmates and a teacher, will also enjoy a VIP behind-the-scenes tour of the Metro depot in Wednesbury.

“The entries will be judged by the Metro team, and we will be looking for a design that reflects our commitment to connecting people and communities,” Sophie added.

“Although this event is specifically tailored for children, we will unveil additional opportunities for customer participation in our anniversary celebrations next month.”
