Well-behaved dogs will continue to be welcomed on trams in the West Midlands following a change in the rules that’s been welcomed by Metro customers.

An initial three-month trial was launched in August last year and then extended for another 3-months to enable West Midlands Metro to collect more feedback from both the travelling public and its employees.

Anthony Stanley, Metro’s Head of Operations and Safety, explained: “Since pet dogs were first allowed on board our trams, we’ve not had any reports of serious problems and had a very positive debate about our future policy.

“We would like to thank all those who submitted their views, both for and against. After a thorough review of all the feedback, the consensus has been in favour of permanently adopting the revised approach.”

Previously, only assistance dogs were allowed onboard the Metro but from April 1st our  ‘Conditions of Carriage’ changed following the successful completion of the trial.

We are committed to providing a service that is accessible to the community we serve. As part of this commitment, each fare-paying customer is now permitted to travel on board with one dog on a lead. Owners must adhere to the provided guidance found here and take responsibility for their dog’s behaviour, ensuring they remain off the seats and cleaning up any mess they create.
