You’ll find a Metro Ticket Machine at every single tram stop across the network. Wherever you’re travelling from, there’s always a machine close by, ready when you need it. They’re quick, simple, and designed to make buying before you board completely stress-free, whether you’re a regular commuter or travelling with us for the first time.

  • Convenient access: Every tram stop has at least one machine, making it easy to buy your ticket or top up your Swift card before you board.

  • Quick and accessible: Machines are easy to spot and simple to use. Follow the on‑screen steps and you’ll have your ticket in seconds, so you’re ready to board without any delays.

  • Flexible ticket options: Choose from Single and Day Tickets for the zones you’re travelling in, or pick up weekly, monthly and multi‑modal passes. Everything you need is available ahead of your journey.

  • New Swift cards at cash and card machines: If you need a Swift card for the first time, visit a cash and card machine. These are the machines that issue new cards, making it easy to get set up for your trip.

  • Swift card support: Top up your Swift card or add weekly and monthly passes instantly, so you’re always ready to board with a valid ticket.

  • Multiple ways to pay: Depending on the machine, you can pay with cash, card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Swift Go or Swift Pay As You Go.

There are at least two ticket machines at every tram stop, and each one works differently.

Contactless Machines

Our contactless machines offer fast, tap-and-go payments. Pay using debit or credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Swift Go or Swift Pay As You Go. You can top up an existing Swift card here, but not buy a new one. Perfect when you want to buy fast and move on.

Cash and Card Machines

All stops also have machines that accept cash as well as card, giving you more flexibility when buying your ticket or topping up your Swift card. These machines also let you buy a brand new Swift card, and are perfect if you prefer to pay with coins or notes, or don’t have access to contactless payment.

Where to find a Metro Ticket Machines

Every tram stop on the Metro network has at least two ticket machines, conveniently located at the platform entrances.

Here are some frequently asked questions providing additional information about the introduction of ticket machines at Metro stops.

Ticket machines provide you with another way to buy your ticket for the tram. In addition, you can also buy weekly and monthly passes and top-up your Swift card using the machines. Ticket machines is part of a wider plan which will see customers buy their tickets before they board the tram in the future.

We now operate Buy Before You Board — you can no longer purchase a ticket on board the tram.

You must now buy your ticket from the Ticket Machines or the MyMetro app before you board.

There is at least two ticket machines located at each tram stop. You can view our network and stop locations here.

You can buy single Metro only tickets, day tickets for tram, bus + Metro and nnetwork (bus, tram and train) travel, as well as adult season tickets on a Swift card.

Yes, you can top up your Swift Pay As You Go card using any of the ticket machines at the tram stop.

Yes. You can pay for your ticket using cash (coins and notes, except for £50 notes). You can also pay using your debit or credit card, contactless, Apple Pay or Google Pay and Swift Go and Swift Pay As You Go.

You can buy your tram tickets on the MyMetro app, available on iOS and Android from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.  

The app offers a range of Metro‑only and bus+Metro tickets for both adults and children, including a selection of exclusive app‑only tickets. Find out more here.
