At West Midlands Metro, we're proud to grow more than just connections - we're cultivating a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future for our reigion.
As part of our environmental commitment, our Civil Works team at MML has begun installing Eco-Islands at tram stops across the network.
These vibrant wildflower zones are designed to support biodiversity, attract pollinators, and create vital habitats for local wildlife — all while adding natural beauty to your everyday journey.
What Are Eco-Islands?
Eco-Islands are low-maintenance green spaces planted with native wildflowers.
Carefully designed to thrive in urban settings, they require minimal upkeep and offer maximum ecological benefit. They’re more than just pretty patches — they’re living ecosystems that bring nature back into the heart of our communities.
Wildlife You Might Spot
Pollinators
Bees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies, and wasps are drawn to the nectar-rich blooms, helping them feed, reproduce, and pollinate nearby plants.
Insects
Ladybirds, lacewings, and ground beetles help control pests like aphids, keeping the ecosystem balanced and healthy.
Birds
As wildflowers go to seed, they provide food for birds like finches and sparrows.
Small Mammals
Taller growth offers shelter and nesting spots, while the wider habitat supports hedgehogs, mice, bats, and amphibians.
Why It Matters?
Eco-Islands aren’t just beautiful – they’re powerful tools for environment restoration and climate resilience.
Here’s what they do:
Stabilise soil and reduce erosion
Improve water absorption and drainage
Enrich soil with organic matter
Create wildlife corridors that reconnect fragmented green spaces
By introducing Eco-Islands, we’re:
Giving back to nature
Supporting native species
Creating greener, more sustainable public spaces for everyone
Keep an Eye Out — and Get Involved!
You’ll see more Eco-Islands blooming at tram stops across the network.
We invite you to:
Snap and share your favourite Eco-Island moments
Suggest wildflowers you’d love to see
Celebrate the wildlife you spot
Together, we're growing something special - one stop at a time.
