West Midlands Metro Scooter Policy

West Midlands Metro are dedicated to making travel on board the tram, accessible and inclusive for all passengers. West Midlands Metro operates a scooter policy, which enables passengers to access the tram using a mobility scooter. There is NO legal requirement to carry Mobility Scooters, unlike wheelchairs and scooters are carried at the discretion of West Midlands Metro.

For passengers to access the tram with a scooter, passengers must first apply for and be in possession of a valid scooter permit identification card. To travel on the tram the following will apply:

1. Passengers must contact West Midlands Metro Scooter Permit Applications via email, webform or post, providing details of the make and model of the scooter.

2. Scooters must meet the following criteria in order to be permitted to travel on the tram:

  • Class 2 scooter with 3 or 4 wheels;
  • Do not have headlights or indicators;
  • Limited to travel at no more than 4mph;
  • No more than 1000mm long and 600mm wide; and
  • Have a turning radius not exceeding 1200mm.
  • (Class 3 scooters or larger do not meet the above requirements and are NOT permitted to travel on the tram).

3. West Midlands Metro will assess the application based on the criteria set out above and aim to respond to the passenger within 10 working days to advise if the application has been approved or rejected.

4. If scooter permit application is approved a scooter permit will be issued in the form of a credit card style scooter permit identification card, which is valid for 5 years from date of issue.

5. Passengers with the recognised acceptable scooter, will only be accepted for travel on the tram, if they are in possession of a valid permit for the scooter. They may be asked to present the scooter permit identification card to the conductor, prior to entering the tram or whilst onboard the tram.

6. Scooter permits are not transferable. Out-of-date scooter permits and scooter permits that are fraudulently used will be confiscated from the passenger.

  • The scooter must be parked on the tram in the designated area, against the backrest in the direction of travel, with the brake engaged.

7. The scooter must not be parked to cause any obstruction to staff of other passengers.

8. The passenger must remain on the scooter, using the hand-rails provided for stability.

9. Scooters will NOT be permitted to travel on the tram, even if the passenger is in the possession of a valid scooter permit, if the following applies:

  • The tram is overcrowded and there is not enough room.
  • The area for the scooter is already occupied by a wheelchair, buggy or mobility scooter.
  • The scooter poses an obstruction or danger to other passengers.
  • The scooter is not maintained and in satisfactory working order.
  • The scooter is overloaded and unstable.

10. West Midlands Metro reserve the right to withdraw the scooter permit in the event of fraudulent use of the scooter by the permit holder, which results in any damage or injury to staff, passengers and/ or the tram.
