West Midlands Metro is celebrating international recognition after being shortlisted for this year’s Global Light Rail Awards.
This is a testament to the team’s dedication to delivering real benefits for customers, the environment and communities served by the network.
The award shortlist published this week names the Metro network as a front-runner in six award categories, including UK Operator of the Year and Most Improved System.
Sophie Allision, Metro’s Managing Director, explained: “This recognition from the wider light rail community represents a huge vote of confidence in our dedicated team.
“We have worked tirelessly over the past 12 months to enhance existing services while planning for future expansion, and to be nominated for six awards is a huge achievement and endorsement in itself.”
A switch to 100% renewable energy, achieving zero waste to landfill, and investment in the latest LED lighting to reduce carbon emissions have earned Metro a place in the running for an environmental accolade at the awards, which will be presented during a gala awards dinner in London next month.
Two standout Metro team members are also in the running for top accolades: Network Controller Nicola Steadman has been shortlisted for Employee of the Year, while Assistant Fleet Engineer Michael Parkes is a leading contender for the Rising Star Award.
“Across the network, everyone has played their part in boosting customer numbers by over six per cent, driving customer satisfaction to above 90 per cent, whilst also increasing service reliability, punctuality and frequency,” Sophie continued. “These achievements reflect the dedication and teamwork that define our Metro values.”
These impressive results and the dedicated team behind them have earned Metro a nomination for the Vision of the Year Award, recognising the network’s commitment to continuous improvement in service delivery for customers and the communities it serves.
The winners will be announced on October 1. For more information about the Global Light Rail Awards, click here.
