National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect moment to spotlight the people who keep our region moving and the next generation who could soon be part of it.
At West Midlands Metro, apprentices aren’t just trainees; they’re future drivers, engineers, technicians and leaders shaping the network as it grows. With major extensions on the way, including the Dudley and Birmingham Eastside routes, the Metro is gearing up to bring new talent into operations, infrastructure and rolling stock. It’s a chance to step into a sector that’s expanding, modern, and central to a greener West Midlands.

Clare Pattinson, Human Resources Operations Manager, puts it: “Our apprenticeship programmes are designed for people who are just starting their careers. You don’t need experience, just curiosity, commitment and the desire to learn. We’ll give you the skills, the support and the qualifications to build a career you can be proud of.”
And that’s exactly what the programme offers. Apprentices earn a minimum of £18,000 a year (depending on age) whilst working towards a Level 3 qualification, with the option to progress to Level 4. Metro also handles college enrolment, so applicants don’t need to be studying yet. The only academic requirement is a Grade C GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths, English and Science.
Apprentices can step into roles that will make a real difference to how people travel across the region. For anyone who wants a hands-on start, a recognised qualification and a pathway into a sustainable industry, it’s a standout opportunity.
Clare adds: “We’ve seen so many apprentices grow into confident, skilled professionals. We can’t wait to welcome the next group into the Metro family.”
