Police patrols are being stepped up across West Midlands Metro as part of ongoing plans to further strengthen safety and security across the Midlands tram network.

Alongside the deployment of both uniformed and plain clothes officers, passengers can also play their part in the initiative by reporting any suspicious activity or incidents they witness.

Anthony Stanley, Metro’s Head of Operations and Safety, explained: “The increased police presence is already making a difference in helping to prevent incidents and enabling faster responses when concerns are raised.

“Although the tram is already considered one of the safest forms of public transport, and serious incidents are fortunately very uncommon, every report submitted by customers and colleagues helps us and the police to build intelligence and identify potential hotspots.

“This information enables targeted responses that provide an extra layer of security across the tramway and offer greater reassurance for both customers and Metro staff.”

The initiative aligns closely with the national ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ campaign, backed by British Transport Police. It also supports Metro’s own investment in state-of-the-art CCTV cameras and improved LED lighting, which have made the network more secure than ever before.

“However, we’ll never be complacent and continue to review all aspects of network safety,” Anthony added.

“In the meantime, we’re delighted to welcome more police officers on board our trams to act as a further deterrent to criminal and anti-social behaviour while providing additional peace of mind for customers and members of the Metro team.”

Metro encourages customers to play their part in keeping the network safe. Concerns can be reported to our Customer Services team via email, social media or on our website. If anyone witnesses a crime or feels in immediate danger, they should always contact 999 straight away.
