West Midlands Metro is stepping up passenger awareness with a new campaign focused on tram door awareness and etiquette. While the initiative comes as the network prepares for the opening of Birmingham Eastside Extension, the message is relevant for everyone, from first-time passengers to seasoned commuters across the entire Metro system.
The campaign introduces a series of short, informative videos that highlight common mistakes like rushing through closing doors, trying to force doors open or blocking exits, and offers simple, practical tips to keep everyone safe and the service running smoothly.

These reminders are just as relevant for seasoned commuters as they are for newcomers to prevent behaviours and common mistakes that can compromise personal safety, delay journeys, and inconvenience others.
Don Walters, Metro’s Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) Manager, explains the campaign’s core message:
“The vast majority of customers behave responsibly when getting on or off the tram, but we sometimes see people putting themselves and others at risk, particularly when they are in a hurry, thus rushing towards the closing doors. We encourage passengers to wait for others to exit the tram before boarding themselves, helping to prevent people from bumping into each other in the doorway. At the same time, standing well clear of the doors will help people to disembark swiftly and safely.”
The videos will soon be available on the Metro website and will be widely shared on its social media channels over the coming weeks.
The campaign also reminds passengers to keep bags, straps, walking sticks, and other items well clear of closing doors.
“A little patience and respect for others go a long way in making tram travel safer and more enjoyable for everyone.” Don added.
