West Midlands Metro is thrilled to announce that Sakinah Begum, an 11 year old pupil from at Regents Park Community Primary School in Birmingham, has been named the winner of the Metro design competition and will soon see her artwork come to life.

Earlier this year, West Midlands Metro encouraged schools to get involved in the Bulls in the City project, an exciting public art trail inspired by Birmingham’s iconic Bullring Bull.

The competition invited primary school children across the West Midlands to showcase their artistic talents in support of Birmingham Hospice, which provides vital palliative and end-of-life care for local communities.

Earlier this year, the Metro invited schools to get involved in the Bulls in the City project, which will charge into Birmingham this summer in support of a local hospice.

As a proud sponsor of the initiative, the Metro is responsible for one of the bulls that will form part of the city-wide art trail running from 16 July to 14 September.

Sophie Allison, the Managing Director of Metro, explained: “This incredible project is all about bringing communities together to celebrate Birmingham’s rich history and culture. We wanted to involve as many youngsters as possible. The response from local schools has been impressive, and choosing a winner was no easy task.

“The talent and enthusiasm shown by every student were truly inspiring, but Sakinah’s submission stood out for its imagination, message, and vibrant use of colour.”

Sakinah’s winning creation will be featured on a miniature bull sculpture that will be presented to her school along with a £250 prize. The winner and her classmates will also be treated to a tour of the Metro to learn more about the world of light rail.

Artist Marnie Maurri will bring the miniature bull to life based on Sakinah’s concept, while Megan Smith-Evans will create the design for the full-size Metro Bull sculpture using inspiration from a legendary midlands-set television show, the name of which is being kept under wraps for now.

“We would like to thank all the youngsters who submitted their designs. They have been truly inspiring, and we’ve been impressed with the talent on show,” she added.

The Bulls in the City trail, delivered by Birmingham Hospice in partnership with Wild in Art, promises a summer of adventure, discovery, creativity, and community spirit as the colourful sculptures take over the city streets.
