West Midlands Metro is rolling out a new ticketing system across the network to make paying for tickets to travel on the tram faster, easier, and more convenient for passengers.
Validator poles are now being installed at tram stops across the network, which will soon support a new contactless ticketing system enabling customers to simply ‘Tap in’ and ‘Tap out’ to pay for their journey using a contactless bank card, travel pass or smart device.
The new ticket validators are due to be switched on in the New Year; this major upgrade is set to bring wide-ranging benefits for customers, while promoting fairness across the network.
Michael Reading-Skilton, Head of Commercial at West Midlands Metro, explained: “Over the next couple of months, customers will see the poles that will hold the validators being installed at tram stops, marking another significant step towards a fairer, more inclusive network.
“As well as making it quicker and more convenient to buy a ticket, the new system will automatically calculate the best fare to cover the cost of the customer’s journey.
“For those making multiple trips or travelling over several days, the system will cap the total cost to guarantee great value for customers.”
Plans are also in place to make the new validator system compatible with other modes of transport in the region enabling seamless travel between bus and tram in the West Midlands.
Once the validators go live, all customers using a bank card, smart device, Swift Go card or travel pass will be required Tap in and Tap out at the start and end of their journey whenever they use the tram.
This upgrade is part of a broader strategy to modernise the ticketing experience across the West Midlands Metro network. Earlier this year, new ticket machines were introduced at tram stops, giving customers more flexible and convenient ways to pay for their journey. These machines are a key part of the ‘Buy Before You Board’ initiative, which encourages passengers to purchase tickets before boarding the tram.
The installation of validators is the next phase in transforming customer experience to streamline travel and make ticketing more accessible for everyone.
“While the validators are being installed, we would urge all customers to follow any signage alerting them to work being undertaken on the platform, and to follow any pedestrian diversions as required,” Michael added.
We continue to invest in smarter, more inclusive travel solutions, allowing passengers to look forward to a quick and more convenient journey across the region.
