West Midlands Metro is in the running for an array of accolades at the prestigious Light Rail ‘Oscars,’ having been shortlisted for an impressive five awards.
Over the past year, the Metro has been able to significantly enhance its service frequency and reliability through a series of strategic infrastructure projects. These initiatives have not only boosted operational performance but also elevated safety standards, making the network a top contender for the Most Improved System title at the Global Light Rail Awards.
Meticulous planning during the necessary suspension of services between Wednesbury and Edgbaston to deliver the strategic infrastructure projects has also secured a spot on the Project of the Year shortlist. Meanwhile, Midland Metro Limited, the network’s operator, is aiming to secure the distinguished title of UK Operator of the Year.
Individual members of the Metro team will also be represented at the awards in October, with Carl Brazier, a dedicated Tram Fleet Engineer from the Rolling Stock Team, shortlisted for the Employee of the Year Award, and Infrastructure Project Engineer Conor Moon recognised as one of the Rising Stars in the light rail industry.
Sophie Allison, West Midlands Metro Managing Director, commented: “As work on the expansion of the network reached a number of significant milestones, the team pulled out all the stops to minimise disruption to customers and keep the region moving while carrying out essential upgrades that have brought immediate benefits.
“After overcoming numerous challenges over the past 12 months, we’re delighted these efforts have been recognised by colleagues from across the wider light rail sector, and to be shortlisted in so many award categories is a major accomplishment in itself.
The winners of the Global Light Rail Awards will be announced at a gala event in London on October 2. Further information can be found here.
