Upgrade of overhead power lines in jewellery quarter

West Midlands Metro tram on tracks

An upgrade to overhead power lines on a section of West Midlands Metro is set to take place this weekend.

As part of an ongoing investment programme in existing infrastructure, essential work will take place between Jewellery Quarter and St Chads from 9.00pm on Saturday night (May 9).

The work is expected to be completed by 10.00am the following morning but while it’s taking place there’ll be no tram service between Handsworth Booth Street and Library, Centenary Square.

To keep customers moving, a 15-minute service will continue to operate between Wolverhampton St George’s and Handsworth Booth Street with a dedicated replacement bus service for onward travel to the city centre.

Full details of the temporary service changes, including a link to replacement bus times can be found here.

Carl Williams, West Midlands Metro Director of Operations, explained: “The work is essential to our future plans and is key to improving reliability as we look forward to providing an even better service to customers.

“The majority of the work is being carried out overnight to ensure minimum inconvenience to key workers who are relying on the tram during the coronavirus outbreak and we expect to resume through services on Sunday morning.”
