A family fun day celebrating two hundred years of railway history in the West Midlands has received a welcome boost from the West Midlands Metro tram network.

The tram network has been confirmed as a gold sponsor of the fund day, taking place on Saturday, May 17 at the Very Light Rail National Innovation Centre in Dudley, the celebrations forms part of the nationwide Railway 200 celebrations, marking two centuries since the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which is widely regarded as the birth of the modern railway.

Visitors will be treated to a range of exciting attractions that celebrate both the rich heritage and future of light rail transport. From immersive rides through the historic Dudley Railway Tunnel to an exclusive look at an old Metro tram transformed into innovative test bed for modern technologies and more.

Sophie Allison, Managing Director of West Midlands Metro, commented: “We’re delighted to support this amazing event as we look towards the launch of services to Dudley and the opening of a brand-new stop right next to the Innovation Centre.

“Last year, we celebrated our landmark anniversary when we marked 25 years since trams returned to the West Midlands, and the event will highlight the exciting evolution of the light rail industry both in the past and future as we continue building a sustainable transport network for people and the community.”
