As the clock counts down to the start of one of the region’s largest sporting events, West Midlands Metro has declared its support for the AJ Bell Great Birmingham Run.
The Midlands’ biggest and best running event, the AJ Bell Great Birmingham Run, sees thousands take on either the half-marathon or the 10K each year, with many raising money for good causes. This year, members of the Metro team will also be taking part.
When runners head to the start line in Centenary Square on Sunday, May 3, extra trams will be in service to help both competitors and spectators travel easily to and from the city centre.
Anthony Stanley, Metro’s Head of Operations and Safety, explained: “Race Day is likely to be one of the busiest days of the year in the city centre, so travelling there by tram offers the best way to avoid getting stuck in traffic.
“Anyone travelling from outside the region by car can also take advantage of our five park and ride facilities, where they can leave their cars for free before using the Metro to complete their journey into the heart of the city.
“What’s more, we’ll also be offering discounted travel for competitors and families planning to cheer them on.”
Two extra trams will run at 6 am and 6:30 am between Wolverhampton and Grand Central, due to temporary road closures to make way for the race, they will not be operating to Edgbaston Village until later in the afternoon.
“We would like to thank all customers in advance for their patience and understanding while we pause services through the city centre for a few hours so the runners can compete safely,” Anthony said.
“Our continued support of the run reflects the Metro’s commitment to the communities we serve, and everyone involved in such a well-loved sporting spectacle,” he added.
On the tram network’s support, AJ Bell Great Birmingham Run Event Manager, Jamie Still, commented: “Public transport plays a vital role in helping the thousands of runners and spectators get to and from the AJ Bell Great Birmingham Run safely and efficiently. West Midlands Metro’s continued support ensures the event runs smoothly and we’re delighted to have them backing one of the Midlands’ most anticipated sporting occasions.”
Further details of services on May 3 will be announced closer to the day, and more information about the run can be found here.
